I analysed the vintage "Car" magazine cover. This cover uses a very striking and creative design approach, offering some unique ideas that I can apply to structure and style my own magazine cover.
Here are the key findings:
-
Main Image: The cover features a dramatic photograph of a Ford Cortina, shot from an elevated angle. The car's headlights are on, creating a strong, dynamic lighting effect that immediately draws attention. This taught me that creative camera angles and lighting can make a simple subject appear much more exciting and powerful — something I would like to experiment with in my own magazine visuals.
-
Typography and Masthead: The magazine name "car" is designed in neon-style letters, giving a modern, rebellious feel. Additionally, the "Z" element is integrated creatively with the design, appearing almost like a lightning bolt striking the car. This shows how typography can become part of the visual narrative rather than just sitting at the top. For my project, I am inspired to think about integrating typography creatively with my main image.
-
Main Cover Line: The bold white cover line "WE EXPLODE THE CORTINA MYTH!" uses large, impactful fonts that contrast sharply against the dark background. The powerful language ("explode" and "myth") adds drama and excitement, creating immediate reader interest. From this, I learned that using strong, action-oriented language in cover lines can make the magazine feel much more energetic and compelling.
-
Use of Colour: The cover uses a minimal colour scheme — mostly dark tones, with the neon red/pink and white fonts standing out. This selective use of colour helps direct focus exactly where the designers want it (the masthead and cover line). This teaches me to limit my colour palette carefully to avoid a cluttered look and keep the focus on key elements.
-
Overall Mood and Tone: The whole design conveys a sense of mystery, excitement, and modernity even though the subject is a classic car. It shows how visual style and mood can be adapted even for traditional topics, by using bold graphic choices.
